Pino
d'Asti is a village located in the Lower Monferrato
area and is part of the local
community of Alto Astigiano. It is nearly
30 Km away from both Turin and Asti. The little
village is situated on the top of a tall hill
(412m above the sea level) ideally positioned
for a fantastic panoramic view of the region.
The surrounding territory is mainly agricultural
and is covered by woods. Pino d'Asti is famous
for the production of excellent quality wines
On the top of the hill, surrounded by the houses
of the village, stands the castle, in testimony
of its glorious past. Visitors can admire the
beautiful Church of the Madonna del Carmine and
the adjacent baroque bell tower designed by Bernardo
Vittone. Dotting the territories surrounding Pino
d'Asti are many country chapels and aedicules,
built by the inhabitants as a sign of their devotion.
Today, the ancient town oven is an accurate reconstruction
of an old carpenters workshop and an authentic
Museum of Wood and Carpenter Tools.
Other
places of interest are: the 18th century Town
Hall building, the church dedicated to San Francesco
Saverio and San Grato, the chapel dedicated to
San Rocco, and a medieval building called "Della
Rosina", located close to the Castle. The
territory of Alto Astigiano offers some of the
best examples of medieval religious art. In this
area, which can be easily reached either from
Turin and Asti, visitors have the pleasure of
admiring
beautiful churches, large and small, all
built with the typical red bricks and yellow tuff,
encircled by stretches of vineyards where the
best wines are produced. The largest and most
famous among these building is the Canonica di
Santa
Maria di Vezzolano.
Castelnuovo
Don Bosco, must not be missed. It is well
known both for its
famous wines and for the names of San Giovanni
Bosco, the founder of the Opera Salesiana, san
Giuseppe Cafasso, blessed Giuseppe Allamano, and
san Domenico Savio e Cardinal Giovanni Cagliero.
Their houses and homes offer an interesting insight
into life during the 19th century.
In
Moncucco, one can visit the Museum
of Chalk and learn about this local resource
how it was utilized during the pre-Industrial
age.
Also
not to be missed is a visit to the territory of
Bottega del Vino.
